Every place listed here is somewhere our own team goes — for ourselves, our children, our parents. A cold, a fever, a bad back, a stiff neck or shoulder, painful menstruation, sciatica, lumbar disc herniation, Parkinson etc. — these are the clinics and practices we've walked into ourselves, over and over, for the better part of ten years. We're not recommending anywhere we haven't personally relied on.
Where a practice requires a medical license, we'll tell you. Where it doesn't, we'll tell you that too — see below for how credentials work differently across TCM therapies in China.
Understanding TCM Credentials in China
In China, different TCM therapies fall under different regulatory categories — this is worth understanding before your visit, because it's not something most guides explain.
Acupuncture and herbal prescription are recognized medical practices. Practitioners must hold a licensed physician qualification to diagnose and prescribe.
Tui na ( Therapeutic Massage / TCM Massage ), gua sha, cupping, and moxibustion fall under China's "health preservation" category. These practitioners are not required to hold a medical license — the same way a massage therapist or a yoga instructor in most countries isn't a licensed doctor. This doesn't make them less skilled.
Many have trained for a decade or more, often under a master practitioner in a lineage system that predates modern licensing entirely. It just means the credential to look for is different.

Mak Waifung TCM Clinic—— Licensed acupuncture & herbal medicine practice
- Licensed practitioner: Mak Waifung
- Practicing since: 15+ years in practice
- Qualification: Licensed TCM physician
- Specializes in: Tongue Reading, Herbal Consultation, Acupuncture
- Hygiene standard: single-use or sterilized tools for every session, disposed after each guest
What to expect:
Mak Waifung will take your pulse, read your tongue and ask about your history before treatment — this is standard practice, not a delay.

Yun Jin— Wellness practice (tui na / gua sha / cupping)
- Registered as a health preservation business, not a medical clinic.
- Practice Lead:
Liu Yunying, 18 years in practice, trained under Zuo Changbo. Miss Liu rarely performs treatment herself — her role is mostly diagnosis, working out what each guest actually needs before treatment starts. Several senior healers on the team are also trained to diagnose.
- Treatment Team:
The hands-on Tui Na, Gua Sha, and Cupping is carried out by a team of trained healers.
As a guest, you'll be paired with whichever healer is available that day — this is normal practice at Yun Jin, not a downgrade.
- Hygiene Standard:
Single-use or sanitized tools for every session, disposed of / sanitized after each guest.
What to expect:
This is a therapeutic massage practice, not a hospital setting — expect a calm, private treatment room.
Miss Liu or a senior healer will typically read your pulse, tongue and do palpation to know your body conditions.
The TCM massage (Tui Na) session is not a standard session. It is applied based on your constitution.
Public TCM Hospital
- Registration:
As a foreign visitor, you'll need to register in advance — either send us a photo of your passport information page, or come with a member of our team directly to the hospital to register in person.
- Doctor tiers:
Chinese public hospitals rank TCM physicians by official title, from resident physician up to attending physician, associate chief physician, and chief physician.
Where availability allows, we help arrange your registration with a more senior-tier doctor.
- Appointment timing:
Your exact consultation time is confirmed at the moment of registration, based on the hospital's remaining slots that day — we'll go over the available options with you then.
Please add our team member on WeChat in advance, so we can coordinate quickly once your time is set.
What to expect:
This is a full public hospital, not a boutique clinic — expect a busier, more clinical environment than the wellness practices above.
It's also where TCM doctors with the highest official rank typically practice.
Patients are seen strictly in registration order — even if you arrive on time, some waiting is normal.
Please don't be late: if you miss your slot, you may need to register again, and same-day treatment isn't guaranteed.
