Guangzhou Metro Guide for First-Time Visitors

Guangzhou Metro Guide for First-Time Visitors

The Guangzhou metro is easy to use even if you don't read Chinese. Stations have English labels, and paying is more flexible than most visitors expect.

Before You Go: Download Amap

Google Maps works poorly in mainland China — slow to load, and routing is often inaccurate.

Download Amap (高德地图) instead. It has an English interface, real-time metro routing, and works reliably across Guangzhou. Worth doing before you land.

How to Pay

Visa or Mastercard — tap directly at the fare gate, one card per person. No app, no setup needed. This is the easiest option for most international visitors.

Alipay — if your account already has a payment method linked, open the app, search "transportation," and scan the QR code at the gate.

WeChat Pay — similar process as Alipay.

Cash — buy a single-journey ticket at the vending machine. Small notes and coins accepted. Need to break a large bill? Ask at the station's customer service counter before buying.

Children under 1.3m ride free.

Getting Around Without Reading Chinese

You don't need to read Chinese to navigate. Every line has a number and color, and station names appear in English throughout. To find your direction, look for the endpoint of the line — that's how direction is marked on every platform sign.

Use Amap to confirm your stop and count stations rather than trying to read names.

For Canton Fair Visitors

Take Line 8. Get off at Xingang East (新港东) or Pazhou (琶洲) — both stations serve the exhibition complex directly.

If You Go the Wrong Direction

Get off at the next stop. At most regular stations, cross to the opposite platform and continue — straightforward. At major interchange stations, the platform layout is more complex, so check the signs before crossing rather than just following the crowd. The signage will show which direction each platform serves.

If You Come Out the Wrong Exit

Don't try to re-enter on your own — just ask a station staff member for help. They're used to this and will point you in the right direction even without shared language.
